LIVE BETTER…

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)

ABOUT RMT

  • All of the massage therapists at Halton Chiropractic and Wellness are licensed registered massage therapists with the College of Massage Therapy of Ontario(CMTO).
  • Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints.
  • Massage therapy is very versatile, it is an effective stand-alone treatment for many specific conditions and for general well-being. It is also an effective complementary therapy to most other therapies. At our clinic, we generally see improved rates of results when massage is used alongside physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture care.
  • Therapeutic massage works by increasing circulation to injured and hypertonic areas. This helps reduce swelling by removing toxins and increases circulation as well as supplying of nutrients required for healing.
  • Following an injury like a sprained ankle, whiplash or work injury, the body often forms tiny matted clusters of scar tissue called adhesions as it repairs itself. These fibres can actually prevent good healing and make movements painful or “tight.” Therapeutic massage helps block scar tissue and keeping the tissue more pliable or elastic.
  • People of all ages are turning to massage therapy for relief from the everyday stress to help maintain health and wellness, to Feel Better…Live Better. Using soft-tissue manipulation techniques, massage reduces stress and fatigue by increasing relaxation and improving circulation.
  • Depending on the style of massage, techniques may include stroking, kneading, rocking, tapping or holding steady pressure. Speak with your massage therapist about your objectives at the beginning of your session to determine the right technique that will best meet your objectives. (e.g. Swedish, deep tissue, acupressure, etc.).
  • Massage can reduce pain and anxiety for people with chronic illnesses. it can reduce the physiological burden of stress and help treat conditions including stress-related tension, cancer-related fatigue, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, low back pain, depression, neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, and Multiple Sclerosis just to name a few.

RMT FAQS

Can anyone receive massage therapy?

Yes, massage therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages, including infants, children, and the elderly. We treat patients of all ages. Parental approval is required for patients 17 years old and younger. There are some conditions for which massage therapy is not appropriate. Our qualified RMTs are trained to recognize such cases.

Is massage therapy a regulated health profession?

Yes. The practice of massage therapy is regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA). Only individuals who have completed the requisite training and have met the strict competency requirements of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) can call themselves a “Registered Massage Therapist” or “RMT”. All of our massage therapists are RMTs.

Do I have to remove all of my clothing during a massage?

No. Most people undress to their undergarments, but you are welcome to undress to your level of comfort. All of our RMTs are trained in proper draping procedures to ensure that your privacy is completely respected at all times during treatment. Our RMT will ensure expectations are understood before any treatment begins. Your comfort and ability to relax is paramount to having an effective treatment.

Does massage therapy hurt?

Generally, massage therapy is quite the opposite. However, as with any treatment affecting the soft tissue, depending upon the condition, there are times when massage therapy may cause some light discomfort. RMTs are trained to provide treatment as comfortable as possible. Communication between you and your RMT will help to maintain your comfort. If needed, our RMTs can and will will modify their techniques to meet your needs.

How often should I have massage therapy?

For some people, one treatment is enough as an indulgence within a busy lifestyle while for others, such as those with acute conditions, massage is most effective when used over a series of treatments and then followed up with maintenance or preventive treatments. Your RMT can help you establish a program which fits your physical needs, lifestyle, recovery and/or maintenance of your health.

Do you provide Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) rehabilitation?

Yes. RMT services are recognized by the Province of Ontario and within the Insurance Board of Canada’s Minor Injury Guidelines as a health care therapy that is to restore your functional ability after a car accident or other MVA (motor vehicle accident). Similar to chiropractic and physiotherapy treatments after a MVA, your automobile insurance company, depending on the coverage you choose, can cover set amounts for massage treatments as a part of your recovery. This amount covered by treatment declines as time passes since your accident. To maximize the coverage you receive as a part of your rehabilitation, It is important that you visit us as soon as possible after your accident, even if symptoms are not immediately present.

Do I need a referral from a medical doctor to see a massage therapist?

No, you do not require a referral to book an appointment with one of RMTs. A referral may be needed by some extended health care plans in order to receive a reimbursement of fees for massage therapy. This varies greatly per plan. Please check the details of your extended health care plan for your specific requirements. We do issue receipts for all RMT services.

Are massage therapy costs covered by OHIP?

No. Massage therapy treatments are not covered by OHIP, regardless of whether the treatments are provided by an RMT, other non-licensed massage therapist, physician or pursuant to a physician’s request.

What reimbursement options are available for registered massage therapy fees?

The following is a summary of reimbursement options available. Amounts covered will vary within each option:

  • Employer sponsored Extended Health Insurance Plans: coverage will vary per individual plan
  • Consumer purchased Extended Health Insurance Plans: coverage will vary per individual plan.
